CRIS Radio

Excerpt from letter from  Sr. Judith Niemet, Assistant Administrator, Provena McAuley Manor

CRIS Radio is a Chicago based radio station available through The Chicago Lighthouse.  The station

broadcasts the reading of several Chicago area newspapers and magazines for persons with “print

related disability.”  That could be visual impairment, inability to hold printed material, or other learning

or developmental disabilities.  Radios are free through The Chicago Lighthouse with submission of

an application identifying the person’s disability and signed by a physician.

Radios were ordered through The Chicago Lighthouse for Provena McAuley Manor but the reception was

not good because of our building construction and distance from the radio signal.  In a conversation with

the technician from Companion Radio, we discovered a way to bring the CRIS signal into our building.

Since 2004, the Companion Radio Program (www.CompanionRadio.com) has been available to our residents

in both the Manor and Convent building. It provides four FM stations that broadcast programs and musical

entertainment 24/7.  The technicians at Companion Radio are able to add a receiver to our “in house” system

and give us a fifth station which would broadcast CRIS radio.

The Aurora Evening Lions Club purchased the equipment.
